Harriet the Eagle died at the age of 35 years. Harriet had been living at the National Eagle Center since 2000, two years after she was hit by a car. She made regular visits to veterans hospitals and was used as the image on Minnesota's "Support Our Troops" license plates. She was easily recognizable by the feather tuft on her head that was a result of her injuries from the 1998 accident. Her visible injuries made her a symbol of hope for wounded warriors, the center said in its announcement. She was a banded bird, so it is known she hatched in 1981 in Vilas County, Wisconsin. Harriet also appeared on TV's "The Today Show," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," and "The Colbert Report." She also traveled to Washington in 2007 for the celebration of the removal of the eagle from the Endangered Species List.
