Bebb was a Private in Co B, 25th Iowa Infantry. He died on board the Union hospital boat "City of Memphis" while enroute to St. Louis.

Although he was in the infantry, he had four brothers who also fought in the Civil War, all in the 4th Iowa Cavalry. One was Edward J. Bebb, recipient of the Medal of Honor.
