Mishicot Solder Killed in Korea
Sgt. William A. Benthien, 19, was killed in action in Korea May 21, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Benthien, route 1, Mishicot, were advised in a telegram received early this week. He was the 12th Manitowoc County resident to die in the Korean War.
A 1950 graduate of Mishicot High School, Sgt. Benthien enlisted in the Army several weeks after leaving school. He received his basic training at Fort Riley, Kan., and left for Korea from Camp Stoneman, Calif., last October.
He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Franklin, John and Frederick and a sister, Elnora. John Benthien is also in the army. He was wounded in Korea and is now recuperating at Percy Jones Hospital, Battle Creek, Mich.

Military funeral rites will be held at 2 pm Saturday at the Specht Funeral Home in Mishicot for Sgt. William Benthien, 19, who was killed in action in Korea May 21, 1951. The Rev. Edward Zell will officiate at the funeral and military rites will be conducted by the Kempen Staudinger Terens Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 7755. Burial will be in Mishicot Funeral Cemetery.
William Benthien was born in 1932 in the Town of Gibson and was graduated from Mishicot High School in 1950. He enlisted in the army in June, 1950 and after training at Fort Riley, Kansas, left for Japan and Korea in Nov. 1950 from Camp Stoneman, Calif.
He was wounded while fighting on the 38th Parallel in Korea and died of wounds on May 21, 1951. He served with Company F, Fifth Infantry Division and received the Purple Heart medal posthumously.
Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Benthien, Route 1, Mishicot; three brothers, John J., of Two Rivers, Fred at home and Frank of Route 1, Mishicot; sister, Ellenora at home. The casket will arrive in Mishicot Thursday evening and friends may call at the funeral home until time of services at 2 pm Saturday.
