Alice Mary Baxter, 94, passed away (on her birthday), Thursday, May 26, 2016 in Arlington, Virginia with her family by her side. Alice (“Ala”) was born on May 26, 1922 in Newport, Rhode Island to John and Alice (Gorman) Baxter.

Alice grew up in Newport, Rhode Island where she graduated from Rogers High School in1939 and was awarded Valedictorian of her class. A school leader and excellent student, she was chosen by Rhode Island her senior year to join 47 other young women for the DAR Good Citizenship Award, resulting in a trip to Washington, D.C.

After high school she graduated with a BA degree from Annhurst College in Woodstock, Ct. Alice went on to receive her Masters in Social Work from Boston University. With her professional training and commitment to social justice, she served in a variety of social work positions in Rhode Island state agencies for over three decades. Alice was well known for her success in placing children for adoption from the Rhode Island State Home and School and in later years continued to hear from many of her adoptees. Alice was actively involved with the founding of Advent House, the first shelter for the homeless in RI.

Although Alice retired from her position with the State over twenty years ago, she continued to dedicate her life in service to God, her church, and the disadvantaged in her community. Her faith life was central to her. Alice’s parishes included St. Mark’s in Cranston, St. Thomas’s in Providence and Church of the Nativity in Burke after she moved to Virginia eight years ago.

Alice was preceded in death by her sisters Elizabeth McCarthy and Sr. Catherine Baxter, R.S.C.J. She is survived by her sister, Joan Fogarty with whom she resided in Burke, Virginia; Saida, her one foster child; nephews (John, Andy and Brendan); nieces (Anne, Kate, Mary Beth, Megan and Alicia); and eighteen grand nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be held Friday, June 3, 2016 at 10:30 am, at the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon in Saint Thomas Church, 65 Fruit Hill Avenue, Providence. Burial will be in Saint Francis Cemetery, 163 Smithfield Avenue, Pawtucket.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Catholic Charities of Rhode Island 1 Cathedral Square Providence, Rhode Island 02903.
