Wegforth, Shirley M.

Shirley Marie Wegforth, formerly of 1517 New York Avenue, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, died Saturday evening, May 28, 2016 at North Ridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc.

She was born in Manitowoc on August 4, 1923, the only child of Reinhardt and Bessie Griebling. Within a few months of Shirley's birth, her mother soon discovered Shirley's love of music. Her mother would put Shirley's buggy near the Victrola and as soon as the music started to play, baby Shirley would fall into a deep slumber. This love of music stayed with her all of her life. As a young girl, she learned to tap dance and performed with the Victor Krejcie's School of Dance in Manitowoc in the 1930s. Shirley played the organ and piano. She had a beautiful singing voice and sang in the high school choir. Shirley attended Manitowoc schools, graduating from Manitowoc Lincoln High School in the top ten percent of 340 members of her class of 1941. She was a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation, she worked as a stenographer and continued to perform with local singing organizations traveling to Sheboygan and Green Bay for the live performances and radio programs. Shirley excelled at A Capella. While shopping with girlfriends in downtown Manitowoc, she met the love of her life and future husband, William C. Wegforth. They became engaged in 1942 before Bill left for the European Theatre. He returned from active duty in January of 1946 and they married on February 27, 1946 at the First Presbyterian Church in Manitowoc. She remained a life-long member of the church serving as an elder and as a choir member and soloist.

Shirley and Bill had four children: Roger Wegforth (deceased), Thomas (Laurie) Wegforth, William S. Wegforth, and Susan (Jason) Koch, all of Manitowoc. She also has three grandchildren: Preston Koch (deceased), Jared Koch, and Samara Koch. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 1994, her parents, and two sisters-in-law: Evelyn Kolar Meyer and Dorothy Sweeney.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church, 502 North 8th Street, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be the Rev.
