Korena M. Vinson, 82, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 26, 2006, in an Abilene hospital.

Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. Monday, October 30th, in Girdner Funeral Home, 141 Elm Street, Abilene. Chapel service will be 4 p.m. Thursday, November 2nd, at the funeral home. Graveside service will be in Wichita Falls at 1 p.m. Friday, November 3rd, in Rosemont Cemetery with the Rev. David Wells officiating both services. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Wichita Falls.

Korena Magdalene Sulentic, lovingly designated "Kork" or "Korky" was born January l9, 1924 to Dan and Anna (Reinertson) Sulentic in Waterloo, Iowa. After graduating Waterloo's West High School, she worked at Hinson's Manufacturing Company producing canvas materials to support the military during World War II. Although Korena was the smallest worker, she was soon promoted to "straw boss" for breaking production records and naturally coming to the rescue when others needed help. She encouraged everyone with her contagious hard-working, tireless, patiotic spirit. Korena continued to serve by joining the Women's Army Corps in 1945 and was stationed at the 49th General Hospital in Tokyo, Japan.

As a decorated veteran of World War II, she married a man who had re-enlisted in the military named Jesse Hughes Vinson. This school teacher, song leader, and evangelist won her heart and they joined their lives from 1950 until his death in 2001 in Wichita Falls. Korena spent most of her life as a devoted Christian wife and mother of two and cared for her husband since 1963 after a disability that brought about his retirement as a civilian instructor at Sheppard Air Force Base.

Korena is survived by: daughter, Karen Vinson Abbott and son-in-law, Dan Abbott of Abilene; son, Jesse Hughes Vinson, Jr.; brothers, Milo Sulentic of Las Vegas, Nevada and Roger Sulentic of Waterloo, Iowa; and dozens of cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she cherished.

She was preceded in death by: brother, Donald Sulentic; sisters, Pauline Nabor and Fran Wagner as well as her husband, Jesse Vinson, Sr.

Korena has courageously battled a disease with a cheerful, thankful spirit sharing the love of Jesus in Abilene. She has met many health care workers, doctors, and nurses that she loved dearly and to whom she gave her radiant smiles and laughter as long as she could while she gratefully received their loving medical and personal attention.
