Julia P. Oswald, of Raymore, Mo., passed away Sept. 28, 2011, at her home.
Julia Patricia (Mehen) Oswald, best known as "Pat", was born to John Raymond Mehen and Helen Katherine (McBride) in the hills of Parkersburg, W.Va. (almost heaven).
She graduated from DeSales Heights Academy (1946) and attended Marietta College. She was a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality and the DeSales Heights Alumnae in Parkersburg. She moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the IRS where she met Renfro Garrison Oswald ("Ozzie") in 1957 at a local dance for armed service members. They were united in marriage on Nov. 1, 1958 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Parkersburg.
They were transferred to Richards-Gebaur AFB in Kansas City, Mo. in 1959. She worked in federal service and retired in 1981 from USDA. Residing in Grandview, Mo. for 46 years.
Pat had many interests and hobbies. She enjoyed traveling, reading mystery novels and poetry, going to the movies, quilting (member of Red Bridge and Coronation of Our Lady Quilters), painting, bingo, crossword puzzles, cards, dominoes, NCIS, and talking on the phone for hours. She especially enjoyed the culinary arts (tea rooms and dinner theatres) and found the best times to be filled with "good food, good friends, and great desserts".
She often shared her "thumbs up or down" on the latest novel, movie, or restaurant. After Ozzie's death in 2008, she moved to John Knox Village (independent living). Her physical ailments in later years never held her back from an adventure or even volunteering in the library. Her Irish Catholic roots gave her a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, a spirit of service to others (Bishop's Award recipient), a grateful heart, and a strong Irish will. She has been a member of Coronation of Our Lady Parish since its beginning, as well as a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. God gave her the gift of gab as well as a quick wit, great sense of humor, and ability to reach out to others. After traveling the country road of life - she's finally home - the place where she belongs. Many thanks to KC Hospice, Villa Ventura and John Knox Village Care Center for the care and compassion bestowed to Pat.
She is survived by a daughter Julie Oswald of Raymore, Mo.; a niece Joanne Boyd of Huntsville, Ala.
