Joy Glazener Moncrief of Athens, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, May 25 at the age of 96. She was born on January 9, 1920 in Freestone County, Texas to the late Verne Ray and Eva Lambert Glazener. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College in 1940. As a member of the "Greatest Generation," she joined the Women's Army Corps during World War II where she achieved the rank of captain. In 1942 she married James Burton Moncrief. After several moves within the state of Texas, they eventually moved their family to Athens, Georgia in 1960. Joy became an active member of the Athens community, including serving as a Red Cross volunteer for almost forty years at Athens Regional Medical Center as well as helping to implement a recovery program for breast cancer survivors. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, The Daughters of the American Revolution & Athens Country Club.

In addition to her parents, Joy was predeceased by her husband of forty-five years, James Burton Moncrief & her brothers, Bud Glazener & Bill Glazener. She is survived by her son, James Moncrief (Karen) of Athens; daughter, Susan Clark (Dave) of Washington, West Virginia; granddaughter, Shannon Moncrief of Clane, Ireland; grandson, Lyn Moncrief (Bea) of Los Angeles, California; great-granddaughters, Clodagh Joy Nathan of Clane, Ireland & Fernanda Burton Moncrief of Los Angeles, California; sisters, Dell Byrd of Hillsboro, Texas & Rae Barton of Dallas, Texas, Wanda Echols of Athens & numerous nieces & nephews.

Visitation will be held at Bernstein Funeral Home on Friday. June 3 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 4 at St. James United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bill Curington officiating. Burial will follow at Oconee Hill Cemetery. Those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to the St. James United Methodist Church, 111 West Lake Drive, Athens, Georgia 30606, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) Moncrief Scholarship Program, 121 Village Parkway, Building 3, Marietta, Georgia 30067 or to a charity of one's choice.
