ONTONAGON, Mich. — Michael “Mick” Hawley, 79, of Ontonagon, passed away Oct. 2, 2013, at Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital.

Mike was born October 9, 1933 to Ned and Vie Hawley. He graduated from Ontonagon High School in 1951 and then served in the Army Combat Engineers from 1953 to 1955.

He received a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Marquette University. After working in Wausau for a couple of years, he became the Assistant City Engineer in 1964. Mike was hired by the City of Manitowoc, WI, in 1966, as the City Engineer. He was promoted to Director of Public Works in 1968. He was responsible for engineering, maintenance and operation of streets, sewers, bridges, traffic control devices, city vehicles and the Manitowoc Transit System. During his tenure in Manitowoc, Mike was instrumental in the creation of the Manitowoc Marina and the construction of nine major bridges. He served on Manitowoc's Planning Commission and the Waste Water Treatment Plant Board.

He was a member of the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Public Works Association, and the Sheboygan Calumet Manitowoc Area Research and Travel Association

He is survived by his wife, (Mary) Jane Hawley; children, Joanie Hawley (Schluge), Colleen Debes (David), Connie Hawley (Bill Wertenberger), Dan Hawley (Mary Pat) and Pat Hawley (Marty); eight grandchildren, Ian, Erin, Mackenzie and Grace Hawley, Danny and Kevin Debes, and Camille and Jack Hawley. Mike is further survived by his brothers, Jack (John) Hawley, and Pat and (Cel) Hawley; and numerous nieces and nephews, and many good friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon at 11 a.m. EDT on Monday, Oct. 7.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 6, from 5-7 p.m. at Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon, and again from 10-11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, at the church.

The Cane Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Memorials may be given to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or a charity of an individual’s choice.
