CARL WADE WORD (February 12, 1934 – December 13, 2000) Carl was born at a cabin in Christian Co., Kentucky rented by his Father on Earl Dew’s place. He was the fourth of six sons and one daughter born to Clay and Mae Lee (Norman) Word. He grew up living in North Christian County, moving frequently from farm to farm because Carl’s father was a sharecropper and his mother a homemaker. In early 1950’s Carl decided that he needed to serve our country, and joined the US Navy during the Korean War era. He served on the USS Manchester charting to bases in Japan, China, Hawaii and Long Beach, California. While on a home leave from the Navy he went on a double date with one his is friends. On that date, he was introduced to his friend’s date, a young 17 year old girl from White Plains, Kentucky. Her name was Willie Mae Barnett. The next day, Carl asked Willie out on a date and from then on, they were a couple. On August 15, 1953 Carl and Willie drove with her parents to Tennessee and got married by a Justice of the Peace. Willie stayed with her parents while Carl returned to the USS Manchester, which was not docked in Long Beach, California. But missing each other, they decided that Willie would join him in California. When the USS Manchester left the base in Long Beach, Willie returned to Evansville and her parent’s house. If was a quick time later that they knew that they were expecting a child. In February 1956, Ricky Allen Word was born. Carl was still on the ship, so he was not there for the birth, but returned to Evansville shortly afterwards. After his enlistment was over, Carl, Willie and Ricky moved to their first house on Helfrich Avenue on the Westside of Evansville. Prior to Carl’s enlistment, he was employed by Hartford Bakery who made Bunny Bread, so he was able to return to his job. It was on Helfrich Avenue that Carl started working with hunting dogs, training them for hunting quail. He would sell and trade different dogs, as well as train them with equipment he made from a cane fishing pole, twine and some wadded up aluminum foil.

A little over two years later after Ricky’s entrance into the world, a second child was born to Carl and Willie, a daughter who they named Vickie Dean Word. In 1961, they actually swapped (not sold) their house with a friend who had a house “out in the country” and they moved out to Henze Road. There Carl really started to expand his hobby and love of training dogs by building a kennel area and he started breeding English Pointers and Setters and raising puppies. They also had horses at their new house. They also had two collie dogs while living there. In 1962 Carl moved his family to Madisonville Kentucky where he worked at the Coal Mines as well as kept his position at Hartford Bakery. About a year later they moved to Hanson Kentucky, but the toll of having two jobs and an injury at the Bakery caused them to reconsider their priorities, and in 1963 they returned to Evansville, renting a house on Rupert Avenue. Early in 1965 they found their dream home –a 3 acre piece of property with a small brick house on a hill, with a huge two-story barn. They purchased the property and moved to Broadway Avenue on the Westside of Evansville in May 1965. This was the house that Carl and Willie would always refer to as home for the rest of their years. Again Carl was able to expand his love of dogs by building 11 kennels and turning approximately 2 acres of the property into a pasture for the horses. Carl won countless trophies with his dogs and had a renowned reputation as a quality breeder and trainer for bird dogs. In 1974, a friend of Carl’s asked him to keep a dog for him as he was going through a divorce and needed a place for his dog to stay. It was a Walker Coon Dog. Carl was intrigued and decided to take the dog at night to see how the dog hunted the raccoon. After just one night of listening to the dog bark as he chased the raccoon, and then the change of his bark once he treed the raccoon, Carl was hooked. He sold all of his bird dogs and began buying, breeding, training and selling coon dogs. His passion was for the Walker Coon dog, but did have a few blue-ticked and red hounds. Carl over-achieved as a breeder and trainer again with the coon dogs and even had one of his dog become the Grand Night Champion.

After retiring from Lewis Brothers Bakeries (formerly Hartford Bakeries) where he had worked his entire career, Carl and Willie did a bit of traveling. Mostly over to St. Louis Missouri where their youngest child lived, but they also made trips to the Nashville area to visit friends, and also went on vacations to Cozumel Mexico and Oahu Hawaii. But they always loved returning to their home on the Westside of Evansville.

In March of 1985, Carl and Willie welcomed their only grandchild, Carla Anne Word, and they both fell instantly in love with her, enjoying getting to have her at their house most weekends. As Carla aged to about 3 years old, Carl made a habit of stopping by his son and daughter-in-laws house after work on Friday’s to pick Carla up for the weekend. They would take her to the Mall to see her Great Grandparents, taking her to parks and friends house – they were a trio for quite some time.

In March of 1998, Carl underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth in his colon. He was in remission until November 1999 when larger tumors were found and he succumbed to the cancer on December 13, 2000. Carl died in the living room of their house of love on the West Side of Evansville.
Willie continued to live at their home until her death in April 2012.

Today, Carl and Willie are together in Heaven, as their children and grandchildren hope that they are looking down at them and guiding each of them as they did throughout their time on this earth, until they can join them one day.
