Ernest Ray “Ernie” McKenzie, 71, of Vevay, died Sunday, June 5, 2016, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 5, 1945, in Madison, to Leslie and Mary Ellen Cole McKenzie. He was raised in Vevay and was a 1965 graduate of Vevay High School. He was in the Air Force from July 8, 1965 to March 30, 1969, serving during the Vietnam War, at the rank of Airman basic. He was united in marriage to Shirley Pavich on Oct. 23, 1973. He was employed as an iron worker and welder for LTV Steel in East Chicago, Ill., retiring in 2004 after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion and Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5396, where he served on the honor guard. He had resided in Vevay since 2004. He owned and operated Ernie’s Woodworks. He enjoyed woodworking, riding his motorcycle and driving around town.

He is survived by two sons, Benjamin McKenzie of Bellvue, Ohio and Michael McKenzie of Lake Station; two brothers, Donald McKenzie of Tuttle, Okla. and Robert McKenzie of Vevay; three sisters: Lona Mathews of Largo, Fla., and Betty Scott and Loretta Hayes, both of Vevay; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, Mary Ellen Cole McKenzie McClellan; four brothers, Lewis Edward McKenzie, who died Oct. 1, 1989, David “Buck” White, who died Nov. 13, 2003, Richard “Rick” McKenzie, who died Aug. 1, 2010 and Elmer Lloyd “Dumpy” White, who died Feb. 23, 2014; two nephews; and two nieces.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Vevay Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion and Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5396.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 11 a.m. until the service.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion Relief Fund or the Loni Amber Lynn Turner Scholarship Fund with the Community Foundation of Switzerland County. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
