Raised in Chattanooga, TN but moved to Charleston, SC in 1941 to work at the Charleston Naval Shipyard from which he retired after 41 years of service. He was a mason and a shriner. He was Captain of the Shrine Patrol and Captain of the Summerville, SC Lodge. He was an Explorer Scout Leader and took his young men on a bicycle trip from Charleston, SC to Chattanooga, TN in the 1950's camping along the way and receiving many police escorts through the cities. He spent his retirement years gardening, raising ducks, chickens, and turkeys for fun. In personality and stamina, I always thought of him as a cross between John Wayne and Gregory Peck. At 75 years old, he cleaned up after Hurricane Hugo downed over 50 trees on his home site. He was the most interesting person to talk with and told many stories of his experiences. He was good looking and had an excellent memory. To sit and listen was pure amazement with lots of laughter. He was married almost 70 years to the same woman.
