Alexis Timothy “Tim” Mogill, Ph.D., 77, of Towanda, passed away Saturday (June 4, 2016) at his residence.

Tim was born Jan. 24, 1939, in Evanston, the son of Theodosi A. and Georgia McDaniel Mogilnitsky. He married Helen Ash Mogill on June 15, 1961. She preceded him in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Terresa Lynn (Brian Craig) Corcoran, Marengo, and Alexandra (Melreo Lorenzo) Hay, Schererville, Ind.; three grandchildren, Sofia Terresa Hay, Gabriella Helena Hay and Mel Alexi Hay, all of Schererville, Ind.; and a sister, Zoe Ann (Rodney H., deceased) Lawson, Wilmette.


He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tim received his bachelor’s degree from Knox College and his master’s degree from the University of Illinois, later earning his doctorate from Illinois State University. Tim was a lifelong educator, spending most of his teaching years at, and retiring from, Streator Township High School. After retirement, he continued teaching at Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, Millikin University and Eureka College. He also spent time writing curriculum for Addison Wesley.

As a teacher at Streator Township High School, Tim was an avid photographer, developing his own pictures in his “in home” darkroom, and was an active member of the school community, serving as a science department chair, swimming coach, softball coach, videographer for sports and class sponsor, and was active in the local teachers’ union. As softball coach, one of Tim’s most memorable experiences was to coach the 1983 state championship team. Tim was also very active in the community, being instrumental in starting the Streator Girls’ Softball League.
