The Rev. Alexander Reed, D.D., passed from our midst to a better land at 12:30 o'clock on Sunday night. He came to this city in October, 1876, and assumed the pastorate of the Central Presbyterian church, in which capacity he labored as faithfully as his failing health would permit until June last.
For some years past he has been afflicted with fibrous consumption, which yielded to neither a prolonged sojourn in Europe, nor the salubrious climate of Colorado. The immediate cause of his death, however, was pleurisy, which he would very probably have been able to resist, had it not been for the enfeebled condition of his system. He was confined to his bed for several days prior to his decease, and his end was so far anticipated that his brother, Dr. Thomas B. Reed, of Philadelphia, was telegraphed for, and arrived in the afternoon of Sunday, just in time to be present during the last solemn moments.
A SKETCH OF HIS LIFE.
Dr. Reed was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, on the twenty-eighth of September, 1832, and was consequently just entering upon his forty-seventh year. He was graduated at Washington and Jefferson college in 1851, and at the Western Theological seminary five years later. Both his grandfathers were ministers of the church of Scotland. He worked with much zeal and success in his Master's service and his early death is a serious loss to his denomination. How much greater to the widow and five children thus bereft of husband and father. But their loss is his eternal gain.
The remains have been embalmed, and will be taken east tomorrow, accompanied by the family, who will not return. Services will be held at the Central Presbyterian church, at 9 o'clock on the morning of their departure.
