One of the older graves in the cemetery, the stone is rather worn. DOD appears to read Aug.13.1842, though the day & year are uncertain. The "aged" line does not show # of days & the # of months is also uncertain. If I'm reading it correctly she might have been the twin of Thomas Jefferson Archer, born May 23rd, 1840.

Though she never appeared in census records, much can be told of her family. Hellen was the daughter of Stephen Archer & Mary Ann née Peck of New York & Connecticut respectively. The couple married in the late 1820's & had at least 9 known children: John, George W, Amanda, Julia Ann, Thomas Jefferson, Hellen M, Sarah Jane, Mary Ann & Charles Scott Archer, the first four of which were born in Ohio. The family moved to Kane County, IL between 1838-1840, settling in Plato Township, & were some of the earliest settlers there, as were the Pecks (Mary Ann's brothers?)

The 1850 Plato census shows the couple with 8 children (all of the above excluding Hellen (already deceased) & Charles) though all are erroneously listed as born in Ohio. This census, taken September 14th, does however include a Winfield S (poorly transcribed as Winfred L) at 4/12 years of age: surely this is Charles Scott (born May 27th, 1850). The 1855 Plato census shows only "S Archer" with a family of six. (Several had married & George or John may have been on their own). Father Stephen (born 1805 NY) died sometime between 1855-1860, though no grave has been found as of yet. The 1860 Plato census shows the widow Mary Ann with five of her children: George (back with the family), Thomas, Sarah Jane, Mary Ann & youngest son Charles.

In the 1860's the entire family, many of whom married here in Kane County, moved west to Iowa, settling in either Grundy or Butler Counties, though some later moved on to South Dakota. Mother Mary Ann née Peck Archer, born 1808 CT, died in Grundy County, IA in 1877 at 68 years, 11 months & 28 days of age (#13408916).

Of the children of Mary Ann Peck & Stephen Archer:
1). John (#50952437) m. Jane Jemima Scott on September 7th, 1854, Kane Co. IL, with whom he had six children: William C, Ernst J, Mary G (died young), Charles, Henry & Carrie. John remarried on October 31st, 1871, Grundy Co., IA to Sarah E Brooks, with whom he had 7 more children: George B, Albert Alford, Grace M, Maud B, Chester A, Alice B & Hazel D (plus 2, Freddie & Laura, who died in infancy).
2). George W (#13382591) m. Lavina M Lewis on September 22nd, 1861, Kane Co., IL, with whom he had three children: Lewis, Mabel & Francis (all in the 1870 Grundy Co., IA census). By 1880 he was a widower with only son Lewis still alive.
3). Amanda (1835 OH- 1860-1867 IL or IA, fate unknown, not on FAG) m. Asa Haskins on November 4th, 1854, Kane Co., IL, with whom she had at least two children: Amos & Ada. After Amanda's death, her husband remarried (no record found) to Susan Emeline Young. The 1870 census shows a new child, George H (1867 IA), but it's unclear which of Asa's wives was the mother.
4). Julia Ann (#98342020) m. Richard Collins on October 2nd, 1856, Kane Co., IL, with whom she had 8 (known) children: Augusta A, Francis E, Dora, George M, Linda, Charles W, Bertie (sic) M & Nell. (The first 2 born in IL, Dora in WI & the rest in IA).
5). Thomas Jefferson (#20058260) m. Caroline "Carrie" Wolcott on January 3rd, 1869, Hillbrook, Mecosta Co., MI, with whom he had 5 children: E Adelbert, Bessie/Betsey, Bell/Belle, Frank R & Glenn A
6). Hellen M (our subject)
7). Sarah Jane (#13402739) m. Nelson H Peck on January 27th, 1864, Butler Co., IA. She often appears in records as "Jane". The couple had only one daughter, Virgie.
8). Mary Ann (#82412378) m. Henry L Kenison on January 10th, 1869, with whom she had one daughter: Lillie
9). Charles Scott (#20058196) m. Rosa/Rosaltha Finette Ferris on November 22nd, 1869, Butler Co., IA, with whom he had 2 known children: Earl Francis & Fern. (Note: no 1880 census found).
