John D Cherry was born 14 Dec 1823 in Warrick, Orange Co, New York ,son of Irish parents. He married Rachel Y (unknown) 7 March 1845, in Middletown, Orange Co, New York. They moved from New York to Pennsylvania, then to Rockford, Winnebago Co, Illinois where they finally settled to raise their five children. Rachel died in 1861 and John left to serve in the Civil War in 1862. He served with the 74th Illinois, Infantry, Co. A. John D Cherry died 9 April 1863 leaving 3 orphaned children; James Leonard 11.4.1848, Julia Henrietta 1.22.1854, and Caroline Marietta1.4.1857, who were raised by the Etta family. Note attached pension records listing guardianship to Robert S Spink.
