WILBERT KEMPEN

Wilbert H. Kempen, 63, well known Mishicot businessman and Wisconsin
cheesemaker, died Sunday morning at the Holy Family Hospital in
Manitowoc where he had been a patient for a few days. He has been
afflicted with a heart ailment for more than a year. Funeral services
will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Specht Funeral Home,
Mishicot, and at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mishicot, the
Rev. George Beth officiating. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery,
Mishicot.
He was born in the town of Woodville, Calumet County, in 1890, a son
of the late Peter and Minnie Van Der Loop Kempen. When a young man, he
learned the cheesemaking trade from his father with whom he had been
associated for a number of years. In 1914, he married the former Martha
Schmit at Greenville, Wis. In 1931, the Kempens moved to Mishicot where
Mr. Kempen purchased a cheese factory, which he operated until a few
years ago. He had been serving as district insurance agent for the
Catholic Knights of Wisconsin since leaving the cheesemaking field. Mr.
Kempen also served for the past few years as treasurer of the village
of Mishicot and was a member of the Mishicot Lions Club and the Holy
Name Society of Holy Cross Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Miss Margaret at home, Mrs.
Lester Loedl, Mrs. Franklin Haese and Mrs. Clarence Haese of Mishicot;
two sons, Eugene and Vernon Kempen of Mishicot. Another son, Sylvester
Kempen, for whom the Kempen-Staudinger-Terens post of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars at Mishicot was named, was a casualty in France in World
War II. Mr. Kempen also leaves a sister, Mrs. Cyril Gaffin of Appleton;
five brothers, Martin of Little Chute, Anton and Arnold of Rudolph,
Wis., Corneal of Grafton, Wis., and Henry Kempen of Hilbert. There are
15 grandchildren.Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 p.m.
Monday to time of services. The rosary will be recited at the funeral
home at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
