Obituary for John F. "Smokey" Kelleher published in the Boston Herald, Boston, MA., on Friday, December 10, 1981, on page 26, as follows:
John F. "Smokey" Kelleher, 80, former Gridiron Club President.
A Mass for John F. "Smokey" Kelleher, 80, of Medfield, well-known football, baseball and hockey official and former president of the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston, will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 in St. Paul's Church, Cambridge.
Kelleher collapsed and died Wednesday night shortly after reading a list of candidates for the Bulger Lowe Award at a Gridiron Club dinner at Fantasia's in Cambridge.
A three-sport athlete at Boston College, from which he was graduated in 1928, he also studied at Notre Dame and held a law degree from Boston College Law School. He served on many sports award committees and was a past president of the Association of New England football officials.
During World War II he served as an Army officer.
He leaves a son, John, Jr. of Needham; a daughter, Genevieve Reagan of Medfield; a sister, Julia M. Suprenard of Somerville, and eight grandchildren.
Interment will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. Arrangements are by the O' Brien Funeral Home, Cambridge."
