Martha Mae (Black) Amato passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, June 8, 2016. Martha was born and raised in Crozet VA, the daughter of the late John William and Mollie Elizabeth (Tilman) Black.

Her roots in Albemarle Country and Crozet VA can be traced back to the Reverend Samuel Black who settled in 1737 on the land that eventually became her birthplace. She was born November 8, 1929 in the farmhouse built by her father.

Martha was a graduate of Crozet High School and was employed by VEPCO when she met her husband of 54 years Thomas Amato Jr. After living a year in Richmond VA, Martha and Tom moved back to Crozet where they lived for 50 years and raised their four children. For a while Martha worked the night shift as a bookkeeper for Morton Frozen Foods before leaving to raise a family as a full-time mother.

For many years she was a member of Hillsboro Baptist Church and then later a member of Crozet Baptist Church. She was a founding member and former President of the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad. Martha enjoyed many hobbies one of which was playing bingo at the Firemen's Fourth of July Fair, but most of all she loved gardening and could always be found in her garden until way after the sun went down. She loved all animals especially cats and dogs and was known for taking in and saving many a stray cat and even a stray dog or two. She took pride in spending time with and watching her granddaughters Catherine Mae and Lizzie Hepler grow up and excel in school, music and sports. Most of all she was the driving force behind her family and she will be sorely missed by all.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Amato Jr, her brother Melvin T. Black and her first son John Thomas Amato.

She leaves behind to carry on her memory her children Marsha L. Amato-Greenspan and her husband, Jeffrey, of Wilmington, Delaware; Robin T. Amato of Charlottesville; Kimberly Amato Hepler and her husband, David, and their children, Catherine Mae and Elizabeth Lee of Fort Defiance; and a son, John Thomas Amato II of Charlottesville and her two dogs Bridget and Cujo who were with her until she passed. In addition, Martha is survived by her younger sister Sarah Jane Pulley and her husband Leonard of Roanoke Rapids NC and their children.

The family would like to thank all those at Morningside of Charlottesville for their love, care and support over the last five years. In addition, many thanks to Hospice of Piedmont for their care and support over the last year.

The immediate Family will receive friends and extended family, from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2016, at Anderson Funeral Home, Crozet. A graveside celebration of life and interment service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2016, at Hillsboro Cemetery followed by a gathering of family and friends with lite lunch and refreshments at Hillsboro Baptist Church Social Hall, 6356 Hillsboro Lane, Crozet VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that memorial contributions be made to Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA (CASPCA), 3355 Berkmar Dr, Charlottesville, VA 22903; Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, PO BOX 188, Crozet, VA 22932 or to Hospice of the Piedmont 675 Peter Jefferson Pkwy #300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
