Avis Lucas Merck

Mrs. Merck, of Charlotte, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at White Oak Manor Nursing Home. She was born April 11, 1905 in Plymouth, NC to William Franklin Lucas and Missouri Pauline Lucas.

She attended Trinity College, now known as Duke University. She moved to Charlotte in 1931 where she married William Edgar Merck.

After her husband was killed in a Civil Air Patrol accident, she worked as secretary at St. Johns Baptist Church then at Plaza Presbyterian Church, where after 25 years of service, she retired at age 80.

She is survived by her sister, Miss Pauline Lucas of Charlotte; her daughter, Betty M. Kilday of Charlotte; her granddaughters, and husbands, Kathy and Bobby Bivens of Wingate, NC, and Bonnie and Steve Rodgers of Waxhaw and her great grandchildren, Lisa and BJ Sullivan of Charlotte, James Bivens of Wingate, and Shyann of Waxhaw.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at McEwen Charlotte Chapel, 727 East Morehead Street, Charlotte, with The Reverend Dr. Richard Kremmer, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, October 30, 2003 at Windley Cemetery, Plymouth, NC.
