Lawrence E. Barnes, age 82, of Mauston, died on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Veterans Hospital in Madison. He was born on January 28, 1934 in Richland County, the son of Ernest and Ethel (Parr) Barnes. Larry was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a military policeman in California. On November 26, 1959, he was married to the former Lucy S. Fitzgerald. Larry farmed for over twenty-five years. He later worked for the South Central Dairy Herd Improvement Association until his retirement. Larry will be remembered as a great inventor, skilled mechanic and electrician. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors and arrowheads.
Survivors include his wife, Lucy; three children: Theresa Day, and her special friend, Mitch Deranick, of Wisconsin Rapids; Ellen Keen, and her special friend, Randy Varsho, of Reedsburg and John Barnes, of Mauston; six grandchildren: Katy, Rob, Mike, Samantha, Nicholas and Jacob; three sisters-in-law: Margaret Barnes, Mary (Henry) Gonzales and Patricia Fitzgerald; one brother-in-law: Michael Fitzgerald; his service dog: Pogo; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Richard Barnes and one sister: Gerda Scharfenberg.
A Memorial Mass will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Holy Family Catholic Church in LaValle with Father Scott Emerson officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Ironton.
