George was born in Pawtucket,RI.Later his
parents moved to East Providence,RI,where he
attended and graduated from East Providence
High School.
He enlisted in the Navy 11 August 1966,at the
the Boston Recruiting Office.
After boot camp training George was sent to
Camp Pendleton,where he served with the 5th
Hospital Company,5th Marine Division,prior to
receiving orders for duty in Vietnam.
George arrived in Vietnam 25 July 1969 and
was assigned to H&S Company,2nd Battalion,
3rd Marine Division.
He was assigned as the 1st Platoon Corpsman
with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion,3rd Marine
Regiment,3rd Marine Division.
At approximately 07:30H,while 1st Platoon
was on a combat patrol in the River Valley,
they were engaged by enemy forces.
Corpsman Bourne died as a result of multiple
fragmentation wounds penetrating his chest,
abdomen,right arm,left leg,face and throat
from a rocket propelled grenade,9 kilometers
north northwest of Thon Khe(the Rockpile)and
8 kilometers north of Vandergrift Combat Base
,while participating in Operation Idaho.
George was married and served his country for
2 years,11 months and 27 days.KIA#44,567.
He had been in Vietnam for 13 days.
George was 22 years,11 months and 1 day old.
He was the first New England medic casualty in
Vietnam while serving as a Corpsman with the
Marines.
