Thomas Buskirk Crabill, 76, of New York, and formerly of Tiffin, passed away June 11, 2016 at the New York University Langone Medical Center. He was born June 19, 1939 in Tiffin, Ohio, to Mary and Robert Crabill. Thomas attended the Pleasant Ridge Church and Clinton Township schools. He played basketball and was a top student in the Tiffin Columbian Class of 1957. Tom earned a scholarship to Ohio State University and was awarded Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Industrial Engineering. Tom married Dianne Flechtner, Tiffin Columbian Class of 1958. He moved to Ithaca, New York. Tom was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in Operations Research with minors in Econometrics and Probability and Statistics from Cornell University. He then moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Tom joined the faculty at Case Western Reserve University. Then Tom moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and became a tenured professor in the School of Business. Tom was selected by the Ford Foundation to be a visiting professor of Operations Research at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. His work as a public and private sector consultant led him to the Rand Institute and Mathmatica Inc. in New York City. He later joined KPMG as the Director of Management Science. He finished his professional career as the Corporate Director of Decision Support Systems at Melville Corporation. Tom is survived by his children, Linda, and Robert, of North Carolina, and Elizabeth of New York City, grandchildren, Anne, and Jonathan of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, girlfriend, Wendy Shapiro of New York City, brothers, Kenneth, and Robert Crabill of Tiffin, and sisters, Ruth Owings of Columbus, Ohio and Barbara Cleary of Pine Mountain, California. A gathering of friends is to be held at his home in New York City, June 16, 2016. Plans are in progress for a celebration of his life to be held in Tiffin, Ohio at a later time. Tom was preceded in death by a brother, John Crabill of Tiffin. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a gift to the Schools of Engineering at his alma maters Ohio State or Cornell University or the American Lung Association.
