A Gloucester County, Virginia native, John R. Cavan (also spelled in some sources as Kevan) served during the Civil War in the Confederate Army's 26th Virginia Infantry. He was captured by Union forces during the Battle of Petersburg in 1864. Following his release from Maryland's Point Lookout Prison, he ran a butcher shop and slaughterhouse in West Point, Virginia before his death in 1902.
