A Confederate soldier, lawyer and legislator. Commissioned as an assistant engineer of the Topographical Engineers of the Confederate Government. After the War he attended Columbian College, now George Washington University, pledging Sigma Chi. He received several scholastic and athletic honors. Becoming a practicing lawyer, he served as Commonwealth's Attorney for King and Queen County. He served four terms as a member House of Delegates of the Virginia General Assembly, and two terms as president of the Baptist General Association of Virginia. Once president of the State Democratic Convention, he also served as a member of the board of trustees for Richmond College. The member of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention was City Attorney of Richmond for twenty-three years.
