WASHINGTON GAZETTE (Indiana), March 19, 1920
Mrs. Joseph Abel, aged sixty-three years and seven months, died at her home in South Washington about 9:55 o'clock in the morning of March 13 of a nervous disorder after two years' suffering. She was born in Daviess County September 4, 1857. Her maiden name was Mary Brown. At the age of twenty-one years, she was married to Joseph Abel. Their four children are Mrs. Anna Payne of Shoals; Mrs. Henry Wiltz of Washington; John and James Abel at home. Mrs. Abel had lived in South Washington for the last eleven years in which time she gained the friendship and love of countless acquaintances. She was a member of St. Simons church. The body will be taken to Shoals for burial March 15 at 10 o'clock in the old Abel Cemetery.
