Thomas Jefferson Hobbs was born on July 9, 1854, in Columbus, Gilmer Twp., Adams Co., IL, to John Rice and Martha Jane (Thomas) Hobbs. His parents were both born in Shelby Co., KY, and moved to Adams Co., IL. John Rice and Martha Jane were married on Nov. 1, 1835 in Adams Co. Martha J. was born in 1818 - 1819 and died in November, 1863 in Columbus, Gilmer Twp., Adams Co., IL. John R. was born in 1816 - 1819 and died on July 13, 1864 in Nashville, Davidson Co., TN. Thomas J. was the 9th child of a family believed to have 9 children; Isaac H., Mary A., John T., Sarah E., Lucinda, Sharlotte A., James M., William H. and Thomas J. Not much is known of Sarah E., Lucinda or Sharlotte A. and it is believed that they died young and no written records of them have been located.
Due to the death of the parents the family was left penniless. After the civil war ended the kids headed west and spread out over Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska. It appears that John and Mary Ann (Hobbs) Roseberry took care of the younger kids until they could take care of themselves.
From the U. S. Census we know that in 1860 Thomas Jefferson Hobbs was living at home in Gilmer Twp., IL with his parents. In 1870 he was living with in Atchison Twp., Nodaway Co., MO with an unrelated family doing farm labor. In 1880 he was living in Nodaway Twp., Nodaway Co., MO, with John and Mary Ann Roseberry, his sister and brother-in-law and his brother, William H. Hobbs and they were all farming.
In about 1885 he married Sarah Jane Weaver (1862-1951), likely in Nodaway Co., MO. Sometime after this, Thomas J. and Sarah J. Hobbs and his brother William H. Hobbs moved west to Lane Co., KS.
In 1895, according to the KS state census, Thomas J. and Sarah J. were living in Willowdale Twp., Dickinson Co., KS. They may have come back to Dickinson Co., KS since some time prior to 1887, Thomas J. and Sarah J. had moved to Lane Co., KS. The 1910 census found Thomas J. and Sarah J. living in Union Twp., Worth Co., MO with his sister Mary Ann Roseberry. This was after the death of John Roseberry so they may have been assisting Mary Ann. In 1920 the census shows Thomas J. and Sarah J. again living in Cheyenne Twp., Lane Co., KS. This time her mother was living with them.
On June 13, 1924 Thomas J. Hobbs died in Healy, Lane Co., KS and was buried in the Healy Cemetery near Healy, KS.

A new school district has been formed in Wilson and Cheyenne townships, to be called the Headlight District, in honor of our Literary paper, "The Headlight", published in district No. 16, last winter. Messrs. Miles, McCarey, and T. J. Hobbs are the officers, and as they are known rustlers, we expect to hear things whiz in that region.
