She was one of seven children; with four sisters and two brothers. She graduated from Ashdown High School in 1943. During her high school years she was the majorette in the band, Carnival Queen and played competitive basketball. She was voted most popular her senior year and later worked at Red River Army Depot during World War II.
On February 8, 1948, she married Gerald Tyson Brewer in Texarkana, Texas. Together they owned and operated Brewer’s Grocery and Market and worked hard to send their three children to S.M.U. in Dallas.
Alma was a member of Williams Memorial U.M.C. She was something of a legacy after teaching Sunday School to kindergartners for more than 50 years. She was a member of Northridge Country Club, an accomplished golfer and a wonderful homemaker. She also enjoyed quilting and tending to her large, backyard vegetable garden. One of her quilts won second place in 1990 at the State Fair of Texas. It was a quilt made with love for her first grandchild. All other grandkids received special handmade “Mumsey” quilts.
After Gerald’s untimely death in 1981, Alma continued to operate the grocery store with the help of her son. The family later sold the store and Alma retired. Retirement became an adventure with many bus trips all over the U.S.A. Her fellow travelers became her closest friends. Never meeting a stranger, she could talk to anyone about anything. She could twirl her majorette baton with pride and skill even into her late eighties.
