Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, January 12, 1924, p.1:
FORMER SENATOR SUED FOR DIVORCE WASHINGTON.
Jan. 11. (Universal Service.) Capital society was afforded a delicious morsel of gossip today by the report that Jonathan Bourne, aged former United States Senator from Oregon, has been made defendant in a suit for divorce. It is understood that the action was instituted in Mobile, Ala. Carol Sperry Bourne, pretty 35-year-old wife of the aged politician, was a social favorite here although she began her career as a clerk for Senator Bourne before they were married. Society gossips took the attitude of "I told you so." Bourne maintains a luxurious apartment here in fashionable Stoneleigh Court. At his offices it was said the former Senator is in Alabama.

Time Magazine, Jan 21, 1924:
Sued for Divorce. Jonathan Bourne, Jr., 68, ex-U. S. Senator from Oregon (1907-1913), by Mrs. Carol B. Sperry Bourne, 43, at Mobile, Ala., where he now lives. She charged desertion. His first wife divorced him in 1913 on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment.

Several websites cite this press release as the earliest known published reference to the term "inhuman treatment."

Jonathan Bourne "Jr." married his third wife Frances B. Turner on May 5, 1925, at Theodore, Alabama, daughter of Rev. William Barker Turner, Episcopal clergyman of Baltimore, Maryland (Bourne Genealogy (1972), p.145).
