He was married on October 15, 1913 in Davidson County to Mary Leticia Vandevort (1895–1974), and she was the daughter of Cyrus Wallace Vandevort (1865–1937) and his wife Harriette Tennessee (Taylor) Vandevort (1867–1925).
Living at 3544 Pleasant Valley Road in Nashville, George was 81 years old and married when he died on September 19, 1972 at a local hospital.
Survivors included his wife Mrs Mary Vandervort Gebhardt, daughters Mrs Dan Chester Sr, Mrs E S Evans and Mrs Charles G Anderton, all in Nashville Mrs R J Patterson of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, sons George Gebhardt III and Cyrus W Gebhardt at Nashville, sixteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and brothers Fred M Gebhardt Sr in Nashville and Leonard O Gebhardt of Alexandria, Louisiana.
Funeral Services were held on September 20th at Woodlawn's Chapel of Roses, and Masonic Graveside Services were conducted by East Nashville Lodge #560 with grandsons serving as Active Pallbearers. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
