Youngest of five born to flour miller Robert King Sr and Margaret Pattison, both from Ayrshire, Scotland.

After the family immigrated in 1829, his sister Agnes was born in Montreal and William in English River Mills (now Riverfield or Howick).

William spent most of his life working in Civil Service. He met and married Hannah Powney in 1860 in Montreal where the first nine of their 10 children were born.

By 1880 the family had moved to Ottawa, where their 10th child was born. William is alternatively listed as a Mechanical Engineer and in Civil Service.
