William F. Martin, 57

"William F. Martin, 57, of 3404 E. Valley St., son of the late Washington Gov. Clarence D. Martin, died yesterday at his home after a long illness. Funeral services will be at 11 o'clock tomorrow in the Bonney - Watson Broadway chapel. Burial will be Wednesday in Spokane. Born in Spokane, Mr. Martin attended the old Moran School on Bainbridge Island. He was from Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault, Minn. He attended Gonzaga University in Spokane and the University of Washington. Mr. Martin then went into the family grain business, serving as Vice President of the F.M. Martin Grain & Milling Co. at Cheney for ten years. He was a captain in the Air Force during four years' service in the Second World War. After the war, Mr. Martin was manager of the grain department of the Quaker Oats Co. in Portland from 1947 to 1959. He returned to Seattle in 1959 and since 1960 had been a broker with Francis I. duPont. Mr. Martin was a member of the University Club, the Rainier Club, the Seattle Tennis Club and the Spokane Club. His father, who was governor of Washington from 1933 to 1941, died in 1955. Surviving are his wife, Katherine D.; a son, William F. Martin, Jr., Spokane; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Bartch, Fresno, Calif.; his mother, Mrs. Margaret H. Martin, Spokane, and two brothers, Frank M, Spokane, and Clarence D. Martin, Jr., Los Angeles, undersecretary of commerce in President Kennedy's administration from 1961 to 1965. The family suggested that remembrances be to charity."
