BRUCE – John Henry Barnes, 95, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the Calhoun County Health Services Hospital in Calhoun City. He was born May 4, 1913, in Calhoun County. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a retired employee of the E.L. Bruce Co. and a grocery store owner. He was a member of Bruce First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, chairman of the ushers and secretary of his Sunday School class. He was a member of the Bruce Lions Club and the VFW.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce with Dr. Daniel Hathorne officiating. Burial will be in Bruce Cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Annette B. Woodson (Jack) of Bruce; two grandchildren, Margaret Long (Trent) of Bruce and Natalie White (Kevin) of Prattville, Ala.; four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlsie Earlene Spratlin Barnes, on July 7, 2003; and his parents, Ralph Barnes and Dora Ann Morgan Barnes.

Pallbearers will be Justin Ware, Tom McKelroy, Trent Long, Ralph Barnes, John Benton Long, Roy McDowell, Kevin White and Jim Cowsert. Honorary pallbearers will be the Bruce First Baptist Men’s Sunday School Class.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home
