On April 26th of this year my Dad, Theodore (Ted) Meyn passed away peacefully while doing the one thing left in his life that he enjoyed - reading. My Facebook and emails were scant after that. There was nothing I felt I could say. And while I wanted to relay that information, I just couldn't find the words or pictures to say it. I knew Father's Day was coming and I thought this was the best time to honor him.
My Dad had three loves - his job, his wife, and his family - my brother and I. My dad lived his childhood life in Jersey City, NJ. My grandfather was Theatre Organist at Loews Theatre there for 29 years. After high school my dad went to Casey Jones Aeronautical School and at the age of 17 went to work for Pan Am Airlines.
Back then you started as a mechanic which he was on the original and after working in the Navel Reserve for Pan AM who was contracted by the Navy during WWII, he was promoted to a flight engineer aboard the airline planes of that time.My Dad retired from PanAm in 1982. During those 40 years, he flew on many different planes and then of course jets as commercial flight grew.
His proudest achievement was that before Pan Am was to fly the biggest jet of that time, the 747, my Dad worked 2 years from JFK airport to write the manuals for the mechanics and engineers on that plane. Back then, all flight engineers boarded their plane with a very large bag that contained several manuals to help them should something go wrong. He then flew the 747 for the rest of his time with PanAm. The day he retired, my mom flew on his flight, as was tradition. And the crew took a picture of him at his control panel. Then they went home and packed up for the traditional trip around the world on PanAM that was their gift. My Dad was 57 years old.
My Mom and Dad had already made their home in Stewart FL and my Dad spent his time with my Mom travelling around the world, and seeing the USA. They also had discovered cruising so there were many cruise trips in their retirement. My Dad would drive my Mom up to this area 4x a year, Christmas, Easter, Summer, and in Sept. for our family picnic on LI that they started. There were as many as 120 but as time went on, it was as small as 30. He and my Mom had run the gathering of her side of the family. This past Sept, he and my Mom were honored by the rest of the family as we celebrated the 60th Family picnic.
13 years ago, we began to notice a decline in my Dad's ability with short term memory. While his memory of events through his 50s were as clear as could be, he couldn't remember if he saw you 2 hours ago. Because of his declining health and needs, 2 years ago, he entered Masonicare in Wallingford CT in the long term care unit, and my Mom, stayed in assisted living in the next building. We celebrated his 90 and 91st birthday there, as well as their 65th and 66th Anniversary.
He was still recovering from a stay in hospital for pneumonia, and suffered a stroke, and died peacefully with my Mom there.
My Dad attended every concert and musical event that I did throughout my childhood, and even when I was running the event as a music teacher in East Windsor CT. My Dad told the story of sitting next to one of my student's parents during the Musical "Sound of Music" we did in 1980, and giving a standing ovation to the students and myself. The parent asked him which student was his child, and he grinned and said the director is my child!
Dad, I love you very much and will miss you very much. Happy Fathers Day.
