Clara the third child of Gustav August Evenson and Emelie Carolina Brown Evenson. Grandma was but one of thirteen children. They came across the prairie's of Nebraska and then into the mountains of Idaho in about 1900 as her next to last sibling was born in Kooskia in 1902.

Her siblings were: A Baby Brother, Annette Christine Evenson Schwartz, Almer Edgar Evenson, Gerhard Alfred Evenson, A Baby Brother, Agnes Elizabeth Evenson Huffman, Selma Charlotte Evenson Reynolds Mattoon, A Baby Brother,
Hendrik "Henry" Samson Evenson, Harold Barnhart Evenson,
George Emanuel Evenson and Ella Mae Evenson Hemphill Huffman.

Clara was a beautiful young woman, with lite caramel brown hair and doe colored brown eyes. From what my Grandmother, Leta has told me she was not overly tall either, and this makes since as all of her girls were about 5' 2" or so. She also had a clear white complexion and just a bit of freckles over her the bridge of her nose, she didn't like to wear hats.

Clara married William Virgil Hamby on Feb. 4, 1906 in Kooskia. They probably married at her parents home.

They made their home on Tahoe Ridge not far from Clara's parents home. It was a log cabin style home and it is now long gone back to nature. It had a single fireplace made of stone, which they used for their cooking and to keep the home warm. And they had a barn type building for their cows and horses that was a bit away from the cabin. The weather there in Kooskia is a lot like the weather in Norway where Clara's parents were from and they all loved it. Clara and William both worked long hard hours, he was doing forestry work and did not get home till after dark and Clara ran the home and land. Chores that never ended, sewing, cooking, taking care of the stock and working a small farm, then along came the children.

Grandma had five children: Chester Benjamin Hamby, Leta May Hamby Jones, Baby Violet, Zelia Carlena Hamby Passey Schwartz and Emma Louise Hamby Ryan.

One December evening Grandma had stock to care for, it was storming, snow on the ground, more coming down. She only planned to be out a few minutes so she didn't wear her coat or bundle up. While she was out she got too cold and came down ill the next day. It turned to pneumonia. She became weaker as the days passed and failed to improve. The family knew her time was getting short, so they gathered the children together to say their final good-byes, she died December 22, 1915 at age 28.

She was so loved by her husband William that he never married again and he wanted to leave Idaho to escape the cold which had killed her. He took his children and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1917 and never went back to Kooskia.
