PFC Canright was killed while eating lunch at the Cu Chi Service Club. Cu Chi was the base camp and HQ for the 25th Division in Vietnam. The 25th Infantry Division band was on the service club stage practicing in preparation for a pending visit by then Secretary of Defense-Robert McNamara. A disgruntled soldier put a Claymore mine in a waste basket and pointed its business end toward the stage, and then detonated the mine from an adjacent partitioned-off area. The blast resulted in the death of 3 soldiers and the wounding of at least 25 others. The disgruntled soldier lost his leg due to the back blast. It is not known what happened to that soldier.
