Mellie was the daughter of Thomas Thornburgh Wilson and Mary Jane Clawson Wilson. They were Quaker's by Religious choice.

Her siblings were William H., Alfred H., Sarah E. Wilson Jessup, Isabelle S. Wilson Haworth, Ruth F., Malinda Jane Wilson Cox, Thomas W., Mahlon C., Amos S., Emeline M., O. Wilson, Rebecca and Joseph J. Wilson.

She married Louis Henry Shaffer, on March 5, 1875 in Spring Dale, Leavenworth County, Kansas. He was a railroad man and so they moved after their two children were born there in Spring Dale.

Mellie was the Mother of Edgar Thomas Schaeffer and Florence Jane Schaeffer Wilson Gruber.

The family had been in Cheyenne just four years while Louis worked as a coach builder in the U.P. shops. During this Time Mellie took ill for months and she died of cancer there at 5:05 o'clock in the afternoon of August 21, 1905 at their home at 2018 Fergurson Street. They had a funeral service there the next day which was attended by a large number of friends and the members of the American Order of Protection, who escorted the remains to the depot, from whence they were shipped to Lawrence, Kan., for interment on that afternoon train. Her body was sent back for burial, here in Oak Hill Cemetery. Those attending her body home were, Louis Schaeffer, her son, Edgar T. Schaeffer, Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Wilson, Mrs. Cox and Orville Carey.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and during her residence in Cheyenne made scores of friends by her many noble, womanly qualities which endeared her to all with whom she came in contact. Mellie was a member of the American Order of Protection, the Degree of Honor and the Ladies of Maccabees.

Great Grandma Mellie left behind: her husband Louis, her son Edgar, her daughter Florence Wilson, a grandson Merritt, her sister Mrs. Cox and Orville Carey.
