Madoria was one of only two daughters born to Ira M. and Elvira Hawley a pioneer couple living in Divide, Oregon outside of Cottage Grove, OR. In 1875 Madoria married Frank Howard Stockwell.

Frank was born in 25 Sept 1851 West Bridgewater, Plymouth, Mass. to Rev. George B. Stockwell (of Vermont) and Mary W. Boerne (of Mass.). His parents moved the family to Kansas in the late 1860's. After the 1870 census Frank struck out on their own heading West. HIs brother John Nelson Stockwell appeared to have waited a little longer and traveled West after the 1885 Kansas census. John was found in Tulare & San Joaquin , CA and died on 18 Nov 1899 in Stockton, CA; he had taken up his father's occupation of ministering. Frank met and married Madoria Hawley in Oregon where they had their first child, Mary Stockwell. Soon after the couple moved to the Moscow, Idaho area where Madoria's brother Nirom M. Hawley had relocated to and had taken advantage of cheap federal land. Frank purchased 2 acreages in township 39 from the US government in 1881 & 1883. He was farming in the 1880 census and living in township 40. In 1885 Frank's mother, Mary Webber Bourne-Stockwell, was living with the family as Frank's father, Rev. George Stockwell had died in 1878 in Kansas.

Madoria took ill with diphtheria in Lewiston, Idaho while her husband was working on the railroads. He took her and the children home to her family in Cottage Grove, Oregon, where she died in 1888. (At this time 50% of people afflicted with diphtheria died.) Frank's mother Mary returned to her home state of Massachusetts where she lived out her remaining years (FAG 198045678).

After Madoria's death the children were raised by Madoria's brother Robert D. Hawley in the Cottage Grove area (per the history recited by Robert D. Hawley's descendant) but it is believed their raising may have been a family affair. Daughter Mary disappeared from the official records after the 1880 census and is believed to have died in Idaho. At the 1900 census 21 yr old daughter Lena was living with her uncle Robert D. Hawley somewhere around Creswell, OR, Eugene was living with his grandparents Ira & Elvira presumably at the family farm, and Raymond was living in Linn county, OR working as a farm hand. A Dec. 28, 1900 land transfer between and Ira & Elvira Hawley grantors, and Nirom M. Hawley grantee was witnessed by Eugene Stockwell and Ray Stockwell; it seems that Frank was gone by this date. On April 18, 1901 daughter Lena married Curtis Veatch at her uncle Robert's home in Creswell, sister Mary Stockwell was again not present for this important occasion.

Frank left the Cottage Grove area seemingly within days of Madoria's death. The April 21, 1888 Eugene City Guard newspaper reported he had uncalled for letters at the post office in Eugene City. He disappeared continuing on with his railroad work and appears to have lost all contact with his children. The family literally has no idea what became of him (until about 2015). The family myth was that he had been killed in an Indian attack on the railroad. Little did they know that Frank had headed to the Texas - Mexico border where he became romantically involved with a Hispanic lady. It had only been 24 months since Madoria's death when Frank married his then five-month pregnant bride. The couple had a total of five children together. Frank fathered nine known children in his lifetime.

Frank & Madoria's four children were Mary, Lena, Raymond, and Eugene:

1) Mary Stockwell b. 1876 Oregon - (with family in Nez Perce, Idaho 1880 census, when father Frank was listed as farmer in township 40. )

2) Lena Stockwell b. 8 June 1878 Moscow, Idaho - d. 25 Sept. 1970 Redmond, Oregon. In an elaborate wedding on April 19th, 1901 she married Curtis Sylvester Veatch at her family home in Creswell OR of her uncle who raised her, Robert D. Hawley. The newlyweds settled in East Halsey, Linn, Oregon where he farmed. The couple had several children Wayne O. Veatch, Mary E. Veatch (also known as Enid M. Veatch), & Wanda S. Veatch. In 1945 Curtis died and she remarried in 1948 to J. Frank McFarland. Her daughter Wanda became the family historian and genealogist.

3) Raymond Earl Stockwell b. Aug. 1880 Moscow, Idaho, d. 29 Aug 1944, Bend, Oregon. By the 1900 census the 18 yr old Ray was living in Linn county, OR working as a farm laborer. Ten years later he was farming at Silver Lake, OR apparently near the area that would become the sheep ranch of his cousin Homer Hawley. By the 1920 census he now was in Keller, Ferry, Washington working as a farm laborer, Dora is listed as his wife although the couple had not yet married. They made their relationship official when Ray on 20 Apr 1925 in Douglas county, OR married the older Dora E. Guering (now Dora E. Leaming as previously married in 1895 to E.W. Leaming which ended in divorce by 1900). Ray & Dora did not have children; although she had children from her first marriage: Robert Leslie Leaming). They settled in Cottage Grove, OR . In the 1940 census she was living without Ray in Cottage Grove, OR in 1940 with her son and grandson. He was a farmer & farm laborer.

4) Eugene Lafayette Stockwell b. 7 Nov 1884 Moscow, Latah County, Idaho, United States of America - lawyer, B.A & JD UofO - d. 23 Jun 1971 Los Angeles County, California, United States of America

New information has been found In recent years as Frank H. Stockwell's second family reached out. Madora's widowed husband Frank indeed had continued railroading. He evidently traveled the railroad line reaching Texas where he worked on the Texas-Mexican Railroad. While riding the rails one day, he met Maria Elisea "Eliza" Palacios Rivero (aka Eliza P. Hannelly on marriage certificate), a Mexican-American (b. 26 Feb 1860, Montemorelos, Nuevo Leon, Mexico - d. 24 Sep 1943, Brownsville, Cameron, Texas). They married on 25 May 1891, Duvall, TX and lived for many years in Concepcion, TX. The couple had five children including daughter Antonia Elisa Stockwell (14 Oct 1892 Monterrey, Nuevo León, México) , daughter Flora Angelina Stockwell-Noble-Waddell (1897 Zaragoza, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico - 1978 Castle Hills, TX FAG 62951863 , son Julian Palacios Stockwell (1894 Conception, TX - 1971 Kingsville, TX), daughter Francisca S. Stockwell - b. 1899 Monclova Coa, Coahuila, Mexico, married Guillmero De Sada, unknown death date.

Madoria was never able to see her children grow into maturity, neither did Frank see any of his children reach maturity. He never returned back to Oregon nor did he contact the children he had with Madoria . Frank also left young children from his marriage to his second wife as he died of pneumonia in the border town of Piedras Negra,Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico on Feb. 19, 1903. His widow and children appeared to have moved to Monterey, Mexico immediately after his death. At least one of his children was able to permanently enter the US as the daughter of an American citizen.

Julian Palacios Stockwell married Elisa Garcia Stockwell . They had two sons Frank Manuel Stockwell ( b. 2 Dec. 1923 San Diego, TX - d. 29 May 2015 Corpus Christi, TX; FAG147159364), Julian Frank Stockwell. (b. 13 Dec 1920 San Diego, TX - 6 Feb. 2013 Benavides, TX; FAG 105589431). The two sons were survived by many children and grandchildren.
