Melvin was a US Army Veteran and retired from Foster Forbes. He was a member of AMVETS, VFW, American Legion, and the Eagles. He enjoyed building things with wood, gardening, and pets.
In addition to his wife, Melvin is survived by his brothers, George (Cindy) Lakin, Upland, Edgar (LaWanda) Goens, Florida, and Sherwood (Kathy) Shockey, Marion; step-son, Kris Smithhart (Alesia Ruley), Marion; step-grandson, Robert Smithhart; and several nieces and nephews.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Nancy Knott and Mabel Burlington; brother, Milton Lakin; and his first wife, Alice Lakin.
The family will receive visitors from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2016, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
A funeral service for Melvin will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at the funeral home with Les Bantz and Pastor Bill Bruneau officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory, Marion.
