Mignon (Lawlis) Barekman, 91, of Brady, Texas, joined her husband, Joe, in our Heavenly Father’s loving arms on Saturday, December 29, 2012, in Brady. Visitation will be Sunday, December 30, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 31, 2012, at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery.
She was born July 16, 1921, in Plainview, Texas, to James L. Lawlis and Edna Ainsworth Lawlis. Mignon attended John Tarleton College in Stephenville, Texas, studying art and business. She was elected as Beauty Queen at Tarleton. Using her business training, she worked for Bert Hughes and Bill Gerron. Later she was employed at Curtis Field as a secretary. This is where she met Joe A. Barekman, who was a civilian flight instructor. They were married November 21, 1943 in the First Christian Church of Brady. They lived in Buffalo, NY, for a few months; then Joe transferred to North American Aviation in Dallas where they lived for a year. They then moved to Brady where they raised their children with a wonderful group of lifetime friends. Mignon was an active member of the First Christian Church and worked as church secretary for several years. She was later employed for 12 years as a legal secretary for Sam McCollum III, from where she retired in 1977. Her love of art carried through her life and she became an accomplished oil and watercolor artist. She generously shared her artistic talents with her friends and family. Her art work will be treasured by her family and will always remind us of the bearty she saw through her eyes.
Mignon’s children and grandson were always first in her life. Her home was a welcome haven for her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter; Carol Barekman of Brady; son; Joe H. Barekman, and wife Cheryl, of Euless; daughter; Janette Newman, and husband Monte, of Wylie; sister; Ann H. Walker of Odessa; niece; Mary Mignon Mabry, husband Woodrow and son William, of The Woodlands.
She was preceded in death by; her parents; husband, Joe A. Barekman; sister: Mary Beth Lawlis; grandson; Charles (Chuck) Atherton.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, PO Box 471, San Angelo, Tx 76902, and DFW Tzus and More Rescue, 1815 Lakewood Blvd, Euless, Tx, 76039-2105.
Arrangements were entrusted to Heritage Funeral Home in Brady.
