Stanton's great-grandfather is Ira Fisk. His grandfather took the surname of Howard Fisk. His father took the surname of Howard Fisk also. Stanton dropped Fisk and became just Howard.
Stanton grew up the second son of a large family. He broke horses as a teen and suffered many cuts and bruises and broken legs. He registered for the draft in both World Wars. Stanton provided for his family as a farmer.
He married Carrie Archibald on December 21, 1915 in St. Anthony, Idaho. They became the parents of five children.
