US Army General. He rose in rank to become Commander in Chief the United Nations Command/Commander in Chief, Republic of Korea/US Combined Forces Command Command/Commander, US Forces/Korea, Commanding General, 8th US Army from May 1984 until June 1987. He graduated from North Georgia College in 1952 and received his commission as a 2nd lieutenant of Infantry in the IS Army. The following year he served his first combat tour as platoon leader with the 3rd Infantry Division in South Korea. In 1954 he returned to the US and served with the 30th Infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia. From 1958 until 1961, he was stationed in Germany as a company commander in the 2nd Armored Rifle Battalion, 36th Infantry, 4rd Armored Division. From 1967 until 1968 he served in South Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division as Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3 (Operations), and as the Commander, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry of the 3rd Brigade Task Force. After returning to the US, he became commander of the 2nd Brigade 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Fort Carson, Colorado, returning there in 1974 to serve as the Assistant Division Commander (Support) and as the Assistant Division Commander (Maneuver) for the 4th Infantry Division until June 1976. From July 1977 to May 1979, he was the Commanding General of the Infantry Center and Commandant of the US Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. In May 1979 he became the Commanding General of the 8th Infantry Division (Mechanized), US Army Europe (USAREUR), until June 1981. when he became Commanding General, 7th Corps, USAREUR, and served there until July 1983. From July 1983 until April 1984 he served as the Deputy Commanding General, US Army Forces Command as well as Commanding General of the 3rd US Army at Fort McPherson, Georgia. He retired from the US Army in June 1987 with 35 years of continuous military service. Among his awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Army Distinguished Service Medal (with one oak leaf cluster), the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit (with three oak leaf clusters) the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Bronze Star (with 'V' device). He died at the age of 85.
