John E. Coutts, 90, ex-ward chairman
Wallingford - John E. Coutts, 90 of 22 Masonic Ave., formerly of Highland St., New Haven, died November 15. He was the widower of Edith Powell Coutts. He was a former purchasing agent of the Seamless Rubber Co., clerk at Yale Law School and former member of the Bureau of Compensation for the City of New Haven. He served as chairman of the old 16th ward of the Republican party and president of the Newhallville Civic Association.
He leaves daughters, Ellen C. Waff of Savage, Md., and Mary C. Ehrler of Bethany; a brother Donald Coutts of Hamden; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Son of the late John and Helen Paterson Coutts. He was the former Purchasing Agent of the Seamless Rubber Co., Clerk at the Yale Law School, former member of the Bureau of Compensation for the City of New Haven. Served as a Chairman of the old 16th Ward Republican Party. Served as President of the Newhallville Civic Association. Served on the Vestry of Trinity Church on the Green. A 50 year member of Hiram Lodge #1, A.F. & A.M., Past Patron of Excelsior Chapter #2, O.E.S. Father of Ellen C. Waff of Savage, MD and Mary C. Ehrler of Bethany. Grandfather of Donna M. Shea, Keith H. Mallinson, Jr., Margret E. Waff, Brian D. Mallinson, Sarah K. Waff and Rebeccah J. Cope. Also survived by 5 great grandchildren. Brother of Donald A. Coutts of Hamden and the late George & David Coutts.
