It is believed that Joseph Emilius Passailaigue was the son of Francois and Catherine DesPujols Passailaigue born in Bordeaux, France. Probably after the death of his parents, Joseph found his way to the French colony of Saint Domingue during the time of the French revolution in the time of King Louis XVIII. It is not exactly known what year he came to Saint Domingue. Joseph married Marguerite LaFaye there in 1788, and their son Louis Joseph Passailaigue was born in 1790 in Port-au-Prince. Because of the race insurrection in Saint Domingue, the family was forced to flee to Barracoa, Cuba in 1800. Marguerite and her son Louis Joseph arrived in Charleston, SC, around 1803 dressed in rags. Joseph remained in Cuba until 1806 as he had hoped to obtain some of his moneys from Saint Domingue. He too as his wife and child did in 1803 arrived in Charleston a broken refugee. It is recorded in the book Roman Catholic Deaths in Charleston, SC, by Susan King, that Joseph Passailaigue, 62 yrs, native of France via Santo Domingo, died on February 27, 1815, and is buried at St. Mary's. His grave has not been located.
