William A. “Bill” Balzer, age 94, of 4709 Broadway Street, Manitowoc, died late Friday evening, June 24, 2016 at Laurel Grove Assisted Living in Manitowoc.

Bill was born in Menominee, MI on July 14, 1921, son of the late Arnold M. and Sena (Jensen) Balzer. He graduated from Marinette High School class of 1940. Bill was an apprentice Pattern Maker at Prescott Iron Works Company in Menominee, MI. He was hired as the youngest Journeyman Pattern Maker at Manitowoc Ship Building Company during the Submarine boom, deferred from the draft twice during the time 20 submarines were being built for WW II. Bill served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps in the Pacific Theater and saw the “Enola Gay Bomber” on the Island Tinian. He was honorably discharged on June 10, 1946. Bill worked at a Prescott Plant in Chicago, IL and Manitowoc Shipbuilding. On November 3, 1951 he married the former Dolly A. Boyle in Waukegan, IL at the home of Harry and Sylvia Breger.

Bill worked 35 years as the head of Eck (Foundry) Industries Pattern Department, retiring in 1989. Bill was a member of Faith Church, life member of American Legion Drews-Bleser Post #88 of Manitowoc, a former member of the Elks Lodge #687, Kiwanis Club, Golden K, Band & Orchestra Parent, Habitat for Humanity, Senior Bowling League, and the Elk’s Golf League.

He is survived by his wife: Dolly, Manitowoc; three daughters: Judy (Clary) Naples, FL; Ann Balzer, Oslo, Norway; Sue (Scott) Ostrenga, Green Bay; one grandchild: Amy Poklinkoski, Nashville, TN; sisters-in-law: Marjorie Balzer, FL; Alberta Boylan, Marion Boyle, Shirley Boyle, Patricia Boyle; brothers-in-law: T. James Boyle, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Arnold and Sena Balzer and step mother: Ella (Johnson) Balzer; one brother: Frederick Balzer; one nephew: William A. Balzer II; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Faith Church, 2201 South 42nd Street, Manitowoc. The Pastor Patrick Hanson will officiate. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.
