Mildred Marie Yarick Baker, the oldest of five daughters, was only ten years old when her mother, Florence Marie Henzler Yarick, died. In high school she trained to be a stenographer and soon went to work to help her father, Walter Husted Yarick, support her four younger sisters. At age 23, however, when she met the tall, dark, handsome James Edgar Baker, she gladly quit that job to become his wife.

Though a first pregnancy for Mildred resulted in miscarriage, she subsequently gave birth to Florence Marie, Walter Edgar, Joanne Virginia, and Patricia Ellen. Life was hard for the family during the depression years, but Jim worked hard and Mildred made every penny count. There was always enough tasty food, though at times it was not much more than potatoes. Mildred was a fine cook, seamstress, homemaker, and caring mother.

In 1940, when Jim drowned in Lake Erie while the two were enjoying their new boat, there was no insurance and a mortgage on their little house. Again, she was left with four youngsters to raise, this time by herself. Mildred resumed her career and kept her family together. She retired in 1971 as head of the secretarial pool at the Family Court Center in Toledo.

Retirement was pleasant, as her lifelong dream to live in a cottage on Lake Erie was fulfilled. Since she did not drive she appreciated visits and trips with her kids. Her last years were difficult, however, with several physical and medical problems. She died peacefully in 1992.
