Maria was born in the village of Borăuti, Bukovina when it was part of the Austrian Hungarian Empire. Now that village is called Borivtsi, Ukraine (historic Bukovina). She emigrated to Canada with her parents, sister Axenia and two brothers Iwan (John) and Nycholaj (Nick) in 1899. They arrived on May 9 and by early summer were on their homestead less than a mile from what would become the village of Andrew.

She married Andrew Achtymichuk on February 16, 1911 and they lived on their farm overlooking Limestone Lake just west of Andrew. There she and Andrew raised twelve children. They retired from farming and moved to Edmonton in 1952.
Maria was laid to rest on 12 Feb 1979.
