George W Bates was a clerk in the Girard, AL / Columbus, GA area in the 1870 census. In 1871, he was a visitor in Macon, GA. In 1873, he represented Macon in the "Miller's Association of Georgia and Carolina" which sought to fight discrimination in railroad freights against millers in the area. By Dec 1873, George Bates had died from small-pox whereas his brother, Asa S. Bates, had recovered. The whereabouts of his remains is unknown.
