Dennis VanMeter, 54, of Clive, passed away after a courageous year-long battle against esophageal cancer on July 4, 2016. Visitation will be Thursday, July 7, 2016 from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m., and a celebration of life mass and luncheon on Friday, July 8, 2016 at 10:30 a.m., all at St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Dennis was born on October 12, 1961 in Sioux City, IA to Nancy VanMeter and Don VanMeter. He graduated from North H.S. and Briar Cliff University where he met the love of his life Maureen McElroy. They wed in 1984 and moved to the Des Moines area.

Dennis was a loyal 30-yr. employee of AIG. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and creating a good meal from scratch. He recently picked up biking with Maureen and her brothers and had a great time joining in on all the fun. Throughout his life he was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan (much to his brother-in-laws dismay). He looked forward to his annual NFL trip he shared with his sons every year. Family, especially his two sons and adorable new grandson, Watson Dennis, meant the world to him.

Dennis is survived by his wife Maureen; sons Zach (Shannon) of Des Moines and Nick (Katie) of Windsor, CO; grandson Watson; mother Nancy VanMeter of Sioux City; father Don VanMeter of Sioux City; 20 loving and supportive brothers & sisters-in-law along with numerous family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents-in-law Terence and Mary Helen McElroy and nephew Kevin McElroy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Mercy Home Hospice, 1055 6th Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50314.
