Edward Evatt, Sr. was a Patriot and Protector of his Country and Family.

Edward Evatt, Sr. was a Private in Captain Charles Pennington's company of the Maryland Militia's Baltimore Independent Artillery. During the Bombardment of Baltimore on September 12-15, 1814, his company was manning the cannons, along Fort McHenry's shoreline. This information was found at the Baltimore City Archives and verified by the Fort McHenry Archivist. Edward's name is added to the Defenders of Baltimore Muster Roll.

Protecting Baltimore was personal for Edward. His home and blacksmith/gunsmith business was located on the east side of Light Street, 327 feet and 9 inches north of Pratt Street in Baltimore City-address is 35/36 Light Street. In current times, this would be near the Inner Harbor area. His wife, Mary Ann, and his children may have been there during the battle.

The next time you sing the 'Star Spangled Banner' "...Bombs bursting in air...rockets red glare..." Remember, Our Edward was there defending our country!

Edward's wife, Mary Ann Legge/Lagge, was born about 1772 and died on August 26, 1816.

Research on Mary Ann is ongoing. Her maiden name may have been LAGGE or LEGGE. I am still searching for her final resting place. It maybe have been at Old St. Peter's Cemetery. This cemetery was sold in the late 1880's and the remains removed fro Loudon Park Cemetery (according to land records and articles in THE SUN). Loudon does not have records of this move.

In his will, Edward left his blacksmith business to his three sons and made provisions for the care of all of his children. He owned numerous properties throughout Baltimore Towne, Fells Point, and 'Old Town'.

Edward and Mary Ann were married at the Trinity Street Protestant Episcopal Church in Fells Point on 16 Aug 1803 by the well known Rev. Rattoone. The couple were blessed with 7 children. One child is unknown.
